The German Shephard Guard dog

The German shephard Guard dog is arguably the most versatile dog of all times. It has been developed temperamentally and structurally to be large, strong and very confident.

Frankly speaking, an average German shephard is very hard working and was originally used for herding activities in its homeland Germany.

The German shephard Guard dog is well known for its loyalty, courage and ability to comprehend a number of specialized training. It is poised, sharp and has well controlled nerves. It is considered by many as a "Police Dog" and so it is believed to be a naturally "fierce" animal.

The average height of a male German shephard is within 60 and 66 cm whereas the female are usually 5 cm less so it isn't surprising that people consider such a large dog to have such an aggressive nature.

As a typical herding sheep dog, it is not gun-shy and possesses the courage to protect its herd from attack from either animal or human. And even as a police dog (due to its natural aptitude for training), It is blessed with an excellent nose to help sniff out anything concealed. It can also lead the blind and as such possesses a high order of intelligence and qualities such as faithfulness, patience, observation and to a sizeable degree, the exercise of judgment.

It is in fact worthy of note that a well trained and equally well bred German shephard is a joy to behold. It loves to be part of a family and as such as social animal. It loves to play with children especially if it gets to know them very well.

The German shephard has the impression of ruggedness combined with nobility and power with an equal mix of agility. There is need for a balance between the forequarter and hindquarter complementing each other in their development.

However, the importance of a good and comprehensive training cannot be overemphasized. It needs to be given obedience training as early as possible especially due to its strong minded, dominating and boisterous nature. The use of praise and other learning methods is important in training a German shephard as harsh or hostile training methods do not have a positive effect on it.

Furthermore, it needs plenty of attention and care. Brushing of its coat and occasional bath is quintessential for hygiene and cleanliness.

Without mincing words, a well cared and properly trained German shephard can be the best companion you can ever think of. Regular training, attention and care are all the necessary requirements and you will be proud you own one.
